Top Athletes Honored at Detroit High School Sports Awards

The Detroit High School Sports Awards recognized the top athletes in the region at its 2024 ceremony. Trey McKenney from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory was named Boys Athlete of the Year, while Mileena Cotter from Salem was honored as Girls Athlete of the Year.

The event, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers and produced in partnership with the U.S. Army, recognized over 300 student-athletes from the Detroit Metro area and surrounding counties. Finalists for Boys Athlete of the Year included Darius Marines from Novi Detroit Catholic Central and Isaiah Marshall from Southfield A&T, while Girls Athlete of the Year finalists included Stella Chapman from Ann Arbor Pioneer and Lauren Timpf from Macomb Lutheran North.

McKenney is a standout basketball player who has set his sights on graduating from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and securing another championship. Despite offers from prep schools outside of Michigan, he remains focused on his goals as a 5-star recruit and Boys Basketball Player of the Year. His impressive double-double stats of 22 points and 10 rebounds per game have positioned him as a top prospect in the state and nationally.

On the other hand, Cotter has established herself as a standout lacrosse player with an incredible scoring record this season. With 215 goals under her belt, she surpassed the previous single-season record by an astounding margin. Cotter’s scoring prowess has earned her Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year honors and cemented her reputation as one of Michigan high school history’s most decorated players as a 5-star recruit committed to playing collegiately at Syracuse University.

Overall, both McKenney and Cotter are shining examples of athletic excellence in their respective sports, inspiring others to strive for greatness on and off the field.
