Gov. Jim Pillen’s property tax reduction plan has faced strong opposition from a coalition of business groups, including grocers, broadcasters, convenience stores and others. In a letter to the governor, the group expressed their concerns that the proposal would result in increased costs for businesses as well as hundreds of dollars in additional expenses for the average Nebraska family.
The proposed bill aims to reduce property taxes by approximately 22% by introducing sales tax on currently exempt items such as pop, candy, and veterinary services for pets. The revenue generated from this tax would be allocated to schools with the goal of reducing property taxes. Despite receiving a 28-14 vote in favor of advancing the bill last week, opponents are prepared to filibuster if necessary to prevent its passage as 33 votes are required to proceed.
