OLCHS iTeam: Tech-Savvy Students Making a Difference in Community Service

OLCHS iTeam transforms into a Technology Learning Hub for the Community

The technology students of Oak Lawn Community High School, also known as the OLCHS iTeam, are making a name for themselves in the community by using their tech skills to help others. This group of students has taken their learning beyond the classroom walls and extended it to reach out to members of the community in need.

Recently, the iTeam visited Simmons Middle School to create fun and interactive lessons for sixth and seventh graders using Sphero robots. They taught basic coding skills to the middle schoolers and challenged them to navigate the robots through obstacle courses, bringing joy and laughter to the children.

The iTeam also provided basic technology assistance to residents at Palos Heights Senior Living, a Spectrum retirement community. They helped senior citizens with tasks such as saving photos, deleting apps, and using features on their cell phones. Tristan Witowski, a junior from Chicago Ridge, highlighted the importance of providing ongoing support to people in need of technological assistance.

The iTeam members are well-trained in interpersonal communication skills, customer service, and leadership, in addition to their proficiency in using Apple devices and creativity apps. They receive in-person training and guidance at the Apple store and have the opportunity to earn specialized certifications in Unity Game Discipline. Janet Meyers, an OLCHS Technology Coach and Apple Distinguished Educator, commended the students for their dedication and positive impact on the community.

The iTeam members exemplify the spirit of service and collaboration through their use of technical skills for the betterment of others. Their work not only enhances their own abilities but also enriches the lives of those they assist in the community.
