ABLE Commission Reminds Businesses of Liability Risks Despite Law Change Ending Mandatory ID Checks for Alcohol Sales

After the signing of a bill that removes the requirement for businesses to check IDs before serving alcohol, the Oklahoma ABLE Commission has issued a statement to clarify their stance on the issue. While businesses are now free to make their own decision about checking IDs, they will still be held accountable if minors are served.

Lori Carter from the ABLE Commission emphasized that they are not concerned about the new law, as they have never issued tickets solely for failing to check an ID. Instead, tickets are only issued when minors are served, placing the responsibility on business owners to enforce their own policies. Carter emphasized that it is up to business owners to protect their business and consider their liability, as well as keeping the public safe.

Despite this change in law, the ABLE Commission continues to encourage businesses to check IDs, as undercover checks will still be conducted throughout the state. The new law will come into effect on November 1st, giving businesses time to adjust to the new regulations.
