2023-2024 Rankings Show OSU and CWRU Among Top Engineering Schools in Ohio, According to U.S. News & World Report

In the latest 2023-2024 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Programs Rankings, several Ohio universities have been recognized for having some of the best graduate programs in engineering. Among the institutions that made it to the top 50 rankings are Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, the University of Dayton, the University of Akron, and the University of Cincinnati.

Ohio State University stands out as having received the highest scores in the state for peer and recruiter assessments, granting the most doctoral degrees, and having a high percentage of tenure-track faculty who are elected members of the National Academy of Engineering. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology holds the top spot as the best engineering school in the country, followed by Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and Georgia Institute of Technology.

The ranking methodology used by U.S. News is unique to evaluating graduate engineering programs and differs from those used for undergraduate engineering programs and online master’s degrees in engineering. U.S. News considers factors such as research activity, faculty resources, academic achievements of students, and assessments by other engineering schools and employers when determining rankings.

Two Ohio schools saw an improvement in their rankings compared to last year: Case Western Reserve University moved up two spots while University of Cincinnati moved up eight spots on their respective lists. However, other Ohio engineering schools experienced a drop in rankings despite strong performance in areas such as publications cited in top journals or externally funded research expenditures.
