Nvidia Stops at Top Spot as Markets Mixed, Weekly Jobless Claims Slightly Higher Than Expected

Microsoft reclaims title as most valuable company after Nvidia’s stock drops

Nvidia shares ended lower on the New York Stock Exchange after losing 3.5 percent on Thursday. The company had surpassed Microsoft and Apple to become the most valuable company in the world just a day earlier, but that position is now back with Microsoft. This decline marked the end of a recent price rise for Nvidia, a designer and seller of chips for artificial intelligence.

At the close of Wall Street trading, Nvidia was valued at just over $3.2 trillion, while Microsoft was valued at over $3.3 trillion, reclaiming the top spot. Apple closed out as the third most valuable company. Investors also digested new data about the American labor market, with the number of weekly jobless claims in the US reaching 238,000, slightly higher than expected. This data impacts the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones index rose by 0.8 percent to 39,134.76 points, while the S&P 500 fell by 0.3 percent to 5,473.17 points and the Nasdaq lost 0.8 percent to 17,721.59 points. The markets were closed on Wednesday and on Tuesday both S&P 500 and Nasdaq had closed at new record levels
