Jenni Lynn, a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurse at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, was recently recognized for her proactive intervention in preventing patient harm. The MHA Keystone Center Speak-up! Award, given quarterly to individuals or teams in Michigan hospitals who show a strong commitment to patient and staff safety, was presented to Lynn on April 30th.
Lynn was commended for her quick thinking and advocacy for a pediatric patient who was receiving treatment for gastroenteritis. After reviewing the patient’s imaging results, Lynn identified a foreign object and alerted the care team. This led to a surgical consultation and life-saving surgery to remove the object.
According to Daniel Carey, MD, president of Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, Lynn’s actions were crucial in this situation. He emphasized the importance of every healthcare professional’s input and the value of creating a culture where speaking up is encouraged and empowered.
Other finalists for the quarter include healthcare workers from McLaren Northern Michigan and University of Michigan Health. MHA CEO Brian Peters commended Lynn for her dedication to patient care and Corewell Health’s commitment to promoting a culture of safety. More information about the MHA Keystone Center Speak-up!
