Energy Fuels, America’s largest uranium producer, has expanded its mining operations due to global instability and rising demand. As a result, the price of this nuclear material has increased, leading to renewed interest in the controversial Pinyon Plain Mine near the South Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park.
The Pinyon Plain Mine covers an area of 6.8 hectares and is expected to operate for 3 to 6 years, producing at least 2 million pounds of uranium – enough to power the state of Arizona for a year. Energy Fuels spokesperson Curtis Moore highlighted the growing global interest in clean, carbon-free nuclear energy and the United States’ move away from Russian uranium supplies, leading to increased domestic demand for uranium.
The spot price of concentrated uranium reached a 16-year peak earlier this year, triggering predictions from analysts that prices could exceed $100 per pound. To meet the growing demand for uranium concentrate, Energy Fuels is also planning to open two more mines in Colorado and Wyoming.
