Joe Alt, first-round OT, signs with Chargers

Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt has signed a four-year contract worth $33.2 million with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was picked fifth overall in the NFL draft and earned unanimous All-America honors as a junior, while serving as team captain during his final season at Notre Dame. During his time at Notre Dame, he helped the offense average 39.1 points per game and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, recognizing college football’s best lineman.

Alt also received first-team All-American recognition as a sophomore in 2022 and started 33 of 38 career games played for the Fighting Irish. He is the highest-drafted Notre Dame offensive lineman in over 50 years and is the first Fighting Irish lineman to be selected in the first round since 2018 when Quenton Nelson went to the Colts and Michael McGlinchey to the 49ers. Alt comes from a football family, as his father John was a first-round draft selection by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984 and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
