NIPSCO Launches Major Gas Meter Upgrade with Advanced Metering Infrastructure Technology to Improve Safety, Efficiency and Customer Experience

NIPSCO Implements Advanced Metering Infrastructure Technology Across Service Area

NIPSCO is expanding its use of advanced metering infrastructure technology by upgrading about 870,000 gas meters with a communications module that allows for automated and remote collection of gas metering information. The installation is scheduled to start in July 2024 and continue through the end of 2026. According to John Sabotnik, NIPSCO Director of Major Projects, this upgrade will help deliver energy safely and reliably, drive operational efficiencies, and enhance customer experience.

As part of its technological advancement and grid modernization efforts, NIPSCO has also announced the deployment of upgraded electric meters in Highland for 3,000 residential customers. This is a key milestone in NIPSCO’s efforts to provide customers with more frequent and enhanced usage data. The company is now moving forward with the mass deployment of 490,000 electric meters to residential and commercial customers, starting in May 2024 and expected to continue through 2027.

The Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) communications module will allow NIPSCO to provide customers with greater visibility into gas consumption, access to on-demand meter reading, and enhanced customer service through increased frequency of meter readings. This technology will also help deliver energy safely and reliably while driving operational efficiencies across the organization.
