Niantic Takes the Lead in Extended Reality Development with New Visual Editor and Upgraded Scaniverse Tool

Niantic Unveils Tools for Creating 3D Content and Scanning Real-World Objects on Mobile Devices

Niantic has recently launched their new visual editor for developers called Niantic Studio, which allows the creation of immersive extended reality (XR) experiences directly from a web browser on mobile devices. In addition, they have updated their Scaniverse scanning tool for capturing real-world objects using mobile devices.

Niantic Studio is a 3D content creation platform for XR that is currently available in a public beta version for free. It offers a dynamic working interface, real-time manipulation of elements in a 3D space, a web game engine, and a live preview mode with the ability to save changes to a project. Projects created can be distributed across desktop, mobile phones, and XR viewers with a single build.

At the ‘Augmented World Expo 2024’, Niantic presented the latest developments in spatial computing, including the new visual editor and the updated Scaniverse scanning tool. The scanning tool now processes images faster using the ‘Gaussian Splatting’ rendering technique, enabling detailed scanning of real-world locations and objects without the need for a LiDAR sensor.

Niantic also showcased their visual positioning system Map (VPS), which offers centimeter-level accuracy and the ability for digital content to persist and change based on user behavior. The company’s mapping team has improved and accelerated the pipeline system to add thousands of new locations to the map daily, with a goal of reaching one million locations by 2024.

In addition to these developments, Niantic demonstrated new experiences available for mixed reality viewers such as ‘Hello Dot’ for Meta Quest, Skatrix Pro for Apple Vision Pro, and a demo of Niantic’s VPS in Magic Leap 2. These experiences offer unique immersive interactions for users of mixed reality devices.
