NFL Moves Toward 18-Game Regular Season Schedule, But Owner John Mara Holds Out with Concerns over Player Wear and Tear

John Mara, co-owner of the Giants, is against the idea of an 18-game schedule

The NFL is considering a potential expansion to an 18-game regular season schedule over 18 weeks. While this idea has been widely discussed, New York Giants co-owner John Mara expressed his reservations about the move, citing concerns about player fatigue and wear and tear as reasons why further discussions with the players union are necessary.

Mara may not be in favor of extending the season, but he acknowledged that he may be in the minority on this issue. From a business standpoint, an extended schedule would bring in more revenue for both teams and the league. However, Mara’s concerns about injuries in recent years have made him particularly wary of the potential drawbacks of an 18-game schedule.

It is unclear whether an extended season would involve starting the season a week earlier, reducing the preseason to two weeks, or adding an additional week to the schedule. If the latter option is chosen and the NFL does not eliminate the Pro Bowl week before the Super Bowl, it could potentially be pushed to President’s Day weekend, giving fans a day off following the game. The topic of expanding the season has gained significant traction this offseason, and it is possible that a vote on the matter could take place next season with implementation beginning in 2026.
