NextChem Tech and MyRemono Secure EU Grant for Industrial-Scale PMMA Recycling Plant with 96% Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction

NextChem Technology secures grant to ramp up chemical recycling technology

NEXTCHEM Tech and MyRemono have signed a grant agreement under the EU ‘Innovation Fund 3rd call for Small Scale projects to implement the BOOST project. The BOOST project aims to implement an industrial-scale plant based on NXRe PMMA continuous modular technology developed by MyRemono, a subsidiary of NEXTCHEM dedicated to plastic depolymerisation.

The NXRe PMMA technology enables the recovery of monomers with high levels of purity from sorted plastic waste, especially polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), through a continuous chemical recycling process. The plant will have an initial processing capacity of approximately 5000 tpy, producing around 4345 tpy of r-MMA and avoiding the consumption of over 13,000 tpy of fossil based raw materials. The project is expected to achieve a 96% relative greenhouse gas emissions avoidance compared to the reference scenario over the first ten years of operation.

The engineering of the industrial unit is in the final stages, and construction is set to be completed in 2026. The project, totaling €6.6 million, will be partially funded by the EU, with approximately €4 million from the grant. BOOST is one of the 18 small-scale projects that have signed the grant agreement out of 72 applications to the EU ‘Innovation Fund 3rd call for Small Scale projects and the only Italian project selected in the chemical sector.

Mohammed Nafid, NextChem Tech Managing Director, expressed confidence in the technological value proposition of NEXTCHEM and the scalability of NXRe PMMA in various sectors. This technology will contribute to improving production sustainability in plastic products, reducing dependence on fossil raw materials for intermediates and promoting a fully circular model in industry.

The BOOST project has been categorized under Downstream news as it focuses on implementing an industrial-scale plant that will have significant impacts on downstream processes and operations within industries.

Overall, this grant agreement marks a significant milestone towards implementing sustainable technologies within industries while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting a circular economy model.
