Newton’s Laser-Equipped Vehicle to Revolutionize Road Maintenance and Safety

Laser technology utilized on vehicles in Newton to collect information on road conditions

In the near future, the City of Newton will have a specialized vehicle with lasers driving on its streets to gather information about street conditions. Operated by IMS, this vehicle will scan the roads and collect data on the surface condition of the city’s pavement. The lasers used are not visible to the human eye and can detect cracks, potholes, and other surface conditions.

The data collected will be compiled into a geographic information system (GIS) database that will be used by the city engineer and staff to analyze pavement conditions and plan future road improvements. This process is expected to take about a week, depending on weather conditions. To ensure accurate data collection, the vehicle typically does not operate when the streets are very wet.

This initiative is part of the city’s efforts to maintain and improve its road infrastructure. By using advanced technology to assess road conditions, the City of Newton aims to make informed decisions about prioritizing and scheduling road maintenance and repairs. Copyright 2024 KWCH.
