Newport County Goalkeeper Earns National Team Call-Up to Play for Antigua and Barbuda in Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers

Newport goalkeeper Townsend selected for Antigua and Barbuda national team squad

Nick Townsend, a Newport County goalkeeper who has represented Antigua and Barbuda seven times, has been selected to play for the country in their upcoming Concacaf World Cup qualifiers. This will be his eighth appearance for the national team.

Townsend had a successful 2023-24 season as Newport County’s number one goalkeeper, starting in all but three of their League Two matches. However, he chose to miss Antigua and Barbuda games last November to focus on maintaining his starting position at the club. With his impressive performances, Townsend has solidified his role as Graham Coughlan’s first choice keeper.

Born in Solihull, Townsend qualifies to play for Antigua and Barbuda through his grandfather. It took four years to confirm his eligibility due to missing names on birth certificates, but DNA tests were ultimately needed to establish his heritage and allow him to represent the national team.

Townsend made his debut for Antigua and Barbuda in a match against Barbados in 2022 and has since continued to be a valuable asset for the team. His selection for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers reflects his commitment to both club and country as he looks to make a significant impact on the international stage.
