Newly Signed QB Kirk Cousins Faces Controversy over Alleged Violation of NFL Anti-Tampering Rules

Falcons penalized for tampering with Kirk Cousins, forfeit fifth-round pick

On Thursday, the Atlanta Falcons were penalized for violating the NFL’s anti-tampering rules by losing a fifth-round pick in the next year’s draft. This happened before they signed quarterback Kirk Cousins. Despite this penalty, Cousins and the team quickly agreed on a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed as soon as the league’s 52-hour legal tampering window opened.

While it’s common for teams and players to quickly reach agreements during this period, Cousins’ comments at his introductory news conference raised concerns that prompted an investigation by the NFL. During the negotiation period, teams are allowed to communicate directly with agents but not with players themselves. However, Cousins suggested that he had conversations with the team’s medical staff before being permitted to have contact.

Despite this penalty imposed on the Falcons, Cousins seemed enthusiastic about joining the team and highlighted the quality of people he interacted with, including support staff and medical professionals. His remarks indicated his excitement to be a part of the organization.
