New York City Hit with Severe Thunderstorm, Leaves Residents Without Power and Injured by Lightning

NYC’s World Trade Center Struck by Lightning in Severe Thunderstorms, Resulting in One Injury

New York City experienced a severe thunderstorm on Thursday, with heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. The storm hit around 10 a.m. ET and left a trail of damage as it moved through the city.

The Big Apple was pelted with several dozen lightning strikes as the storm passed through the area. At the height of the storm, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings covered more than 13 million people in and around New York City. In total, 174 lightning bolts were detected in the greater New York City metro area during the storm.

One lightning bolt injured a person when it struck a building along Pine Street in Manhattan. New York Fire Department officials reported that the individual was taken to a Lower Manhattan hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries was not disclosed. Despite this, many residents were left without power as disruptions to daily routines caused by the storm took place throughout the city.
