New Oceania Record, Olympic Spot Secured: Australia’s 4x100m Quartet Makes History

Australian women secure quota for Paris 2024 in 4x100m relay

On Saturday, the Australian quartet broke their own national record and set a new Oceania record in the 4x100m event. This achievement guaranteed Australia a spot in the Olympic 4x100m event for the first time since Sydney 2000. Bree Masters, who is part of the team, expressed her excitement and disbelief at their success, emphasizing the significance of securing automatic Olympic qualification.

Unfortunately, other Australian teams did not manage to secure a quota on the opening day. The men’s 4x100m relay team finished third in their heat, just missing out on qualification by a whisker. Despite finishing closely behind Jamaica, they clocked in just short of the mark needed to qualify for the Olympics. Similarly, both Australian men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams finished fourth in their heats and did not advance to the finals. To add insult to injury, Australia was not represented in the mixed 4x400m event.

However, there is still hope for those missing out on qualification as an additional qualifying round will take place on Sunday. The top two teams from each heat will qualify for the prestigious Paris 2024 Olympics, giving these teams another chance to shine.
