New National Hotline Set to Revolutionize Crisis Care with Easy-to-Remember Number: 988

Contact this Indiana number for support during a mental health emergency

A national crisis hotline with an easy-to-remember three-digit number, 9-8-8, is set to revolutionize the nation’s approach to crisis care by providing mental health emergency services. This initiative aims to make accessing mental health support easier and more efficient for individuals in need.

Starting from July 1, residents of Indiana seeking mental health resources will no longer be able to call the Be Well Crisis Helpline. Instead, they will need to dial 988 instead of 211. The Be Well Crisis Helpline, which has been operational in the state for two years, will come to an end on June 30, 2024. This change is in line with the establishment of the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in 2022, which has expanded crisis response infrastructure in Indiana.

The Be Well Crisis Helpline was set up by Mental Health America of Indiana in 2020 to provide free mental health resources to Hoosiers during the pandemic. With the availability of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the decision was made to discontinue this helpline service.

Moving forward, individuals seeking mental health support in Indiana should call 988 for assistance. The 211 service will direct callers to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline starting on July 1st, and trained navigators will guide individuals through any crisis or emotional support needed via this lifeline.

This transition marks a national effort aimed at streamlining crisis care and making mental health services more accessible to those who need it most. By dialing 988 or visiting www.988lifeline.org, individuals can connect directly with mental health professionals for support.

The launch of this new hotline is a crucial step towards improving accessibility and efficiency of mental health emergency services across the nation.
