New Mexican President-elect Taps Ebrard as Economy Minister to Oversee USMCA Trade Pact

Newly-elected Mexican president chooses Ebrard as economy minister and de la Fuente as foreign minister

Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has announced her upcoming cabinet, with Marcelo Ebrard being named as the economy minister. In his new role, Ebrard will be responsible for overseeing trade negotiations and reviewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade pact in 2026.

Ebrard expressed his commitment to seeking “shared prosperity” in a statement following his nomination. The Mexican peso strengthened against the US dollar after Sheinbaum’s announcement, while the main stock index experienced a slight dip. Analysts at CIBanco noted that the market’s response reflected confidence in Sheinbaum’s cabinet, recognizing their expertise and political skills.

Other members of the cabinet include Alicia Barcena as environment minister, Rosaura Ruiz as head of a new science and technology ministry, and Ernestina Godoy as judicial adviser. Julio Berdegue, former regional head of the FAO, will lead the agriculture ministry.

Sheinbaum reiterated her support for a policy initiated by President Lopez Obrador to ban genetically modified corn for human consumption. As she prepares to take office, she is expected to reveal more cabinet members next Thursday.
