New Mexican Congress Grants Morena Unprecedented Power to Implement Controversial Reforms

The ruling party in Mexico gains control of Congress, enabling implementation of extensive reform agenda.

In the recent Mexican elections, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and its allied parties secured a solid majority in the Mexican Congress. This majority will allow them to push through a variety of controversial reforms that could have significant implications for Mexico. The ruling coalition, consisting of Morena, Labor (PT), and the Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM), obtained a qualified majority in both the Deputies and the Senate, giving them the power to pass constitutional reforms without opposition support.

The opposition parties, such as the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the Democratic Revolution (PRD), the National Action Party (PAN), and Citizen Movement (MC), did not fare as well in the elections. While they did secure some seats in both the Deputies and the Senate, their overwhelming support poses a challenge to any major opposition to Morena’s proposed reforms.

The reforms that Morena may push through include changes to electoral agencies, energy regulations, judicial systems, and autonomous regulators in certain industries. These changes could have far-reaching consequences for Mexico and its governance structure. The new Congress, which will be sworn in before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador leaves office in October, will have the opportunity to approve these reforms.

In addition to securing victories in many gubernatorial races across Mexico, Morena also received a strong showing from voters at large scale. With seven out of nine governorship wins under their belt, Morena has solidified its position as one of Mexico’s most prominent political parties. As speculation about potential constitutional changes continues before President López Obrador departs from office later this year, it remains uncertain what specific changes may be implemented by Morena’s ruling coalition.

Overall, these election results highlight a period of uncertainty for Mexican politics as Morena continues its dominance and seeks to implement controversial reforms that could reshape Mexico’s future.
