New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Unsuccessful Attempt to Repair the Avon-by-the-Sea to Belmar Bridge Causes a Downturn in Business Traffic and Revenue”.

Business owners report revenue loss as Route 71 bridge remains stuck in upright position.

The Route 71 bridge connecting Avon-by-the-Sea and Belmar has been undergoing repairs for some time now, with the New Jersey Department of Transportation stating that it could take at least another month to complete. The mechanical failure of the 92-year-old bridge on March 1 initially caused the bridge to get stuck in the up position, blocking boat traffic.

To accommodate marine traffic, crews raised the bridge further, inadvertently causing a complete blockage of Main Street for both pedestrians and vehicles. The lack of passing traffic has been especially noticeable on slower days of the week, affecting businesses in the area. Despite these challenges, local business owners along Main Street in both towns have reported a significant drop in sales ranging from 20% to 45% during certain times.

The detour that motorists are forced to take as a result of the bridge closure has diverted traffic away from downtown, impacting foot traffic and overall business. Local business owners are hoping that the NJDOT will work quickly to repair the bridge and have it operational by Memorial Day Weekend as planned. Until then, they will continue to face lost foot traffic and revenue along Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea and Belmar.
