The high school sports reporter for the Statesman Journal is Jarrid Denney

Jarrid Denney is the new high school sports reporter for the Statesman Journal. Since joining the team, he has been covering teams from Salem-Keizer Public Schools as well as others in Marion and Polk counties. Additionally, Denney is tasked with covering some Oregon State sports. Despite having reported on Major League Baseball, Pac-12 football, and other topics in his career, Denney expressed his excitement about joining the Statesman Journal and working with a talented team of reporters, editors, and photographers.

Local journalism is close to his heart, and Denney brings with him experience from working at On3.com, covering Oregon Ducks football and men’s basketball. He has also reported on high school sports for The Register-Guard in Eugene and the Corvallis Gazette-Times. Notably, Denney wrote an in-depth report on the decline in participation in high school football in Oregon.

Since starting in April, Denney has written features and covered local teams participating in various state tournaments and championships. He has also reported on new and departing high school coaches, in addition to covering Oregon State baseball, football, the NFL draft, and women’s basketball. Jonathan Williams serves as the daily news editor for the Statesman Journal and The Register-Guard, and he can be reached at JCWilliams1@Salem.gannett.com if you have any story tips or would like to contact him directly.
