New HDZ Leader Stakes Claim on Tuđmanism: Is a Return to the Past Inevitable?

Plenković Criticizes the Advocates of De-Germanization, Milanović Excluded

Plenković’s stance on Tuđmanism marks a departure from the policies initiated by Ivo Sanader, who had publicly apologized for the negative consequences of Tuđman’s rule and HDZ policies in the 1990s. Sanader’s policies led to cooperation with national minorities, moving towards the center, and opening up to European institutions.

Plenković’s position as a Tuđmanist is seen as a rejection of dehumanization, which was a movement initiated by Sanader. However, Plenković built his political status on the results of de-Demanization, which included opening up towards Europe, adopting principles of liberal democracy, and respecting freedoms of minorities and media.

The reference to Tuđman and resistance to dehumanization is part of Plenković’s effort to strengthen his position within the party and prevent attacks from the right-wing factions. By aligning himself with Tuđmanism, he aims to homogenize the party’s base and present a unified front against external threats.

However, there are concerns that Plenković’s embrace of Tuđmanism may lead to a revival of certain aspects of the Tuđman era, such as corruption, tycoonization, and suppression of media freedom. It remains to be seen whether Plenković’s reference to Tuđman is genuine or merely a strategic move to solidify his leadership position within the HDZ.
