Paris Games to offer prize money for Track and Field events

Los Angeles and Paris have been jointly awarded the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games, respectively. This marks the first time that Paris has hosted the Olympics since 1924. The decision to award Paris the Games was made in 2017, as part of a double award with Los Angeles. Track and field is set to make history by becoming the first sport to introduce international prize money at the Olympics. World Athletics announced that gold medalists at the Paris Olympics will receive $50,000 each. In total, $2.4 million will be allocated to pay the gold medalists across the 48 track and field events at the games. Relay teams will also be awarded $50,000 to split amongst their members. World Athletics has committed to awarding prize money to silver and bronze medalists at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
