New Economic Sanctions Imposed on Belarus by European Union; EU Extends Ban on Dual-Use Goods and Adds Restrictions on Luxury Items

Economic sanctions were imposed on Belarus by the European Union.

The European Union has recently imposed economic sanctions on Belarus, as reported by Meduza. These sanctions are aimed at limiting trade with the country and include restrictions on the export of goods and technologies related to maritime navigation, luxury items, and industrial capabilities. In addition, the EU has extended its ban on the supply of dual-use goods to Belarus.

Furthermore, the EU has imposed a ban on the import of certain products from Belarus, including gold, diamonds, helium, coal, and mineral products like crude oil. The EU has also placed restrictions on the export of goods and technologies used in oil and LNG refining to the country. Additionally, the EU has prohibited the provision of various services to the Belarusian government, state bodies, and related institutions.

In response to these sanctions, the EU Council expanded its ban on transportation of goods by road through European countries using trailers and semi-trailers registered in Belarus. To prevent circumvention of sanctions, exporters are now required to include clauses in contracts prohibiting re-export of certain goods and technology to Belarus.

On June 24th, 2021, the European Union approved a new package of sanctions against Russia in response to ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This marks the fourteenth round of sanctions against Russia by Europe. These measures demonstrate Europe’s commitment to maintaining pressure on both Belarus and Russia for their actions.
