New Department Status for Yale School of Medicine’s Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Department: Recognizing Expertise and Accelerating Growth in AI Medicine

Yale Establishes New Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science

In 2022, Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Section of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science (BIDS) was approved as a department by the Yale Corporation. BIDS, which was previously spread across departments in the school, has been a pioneer in biomedical informatics and holds one of the longest-standing National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported training programs in this field.

Led by Lucila Ohno-Machado, an expert in privacy-enhancing technologies and a member of the National Academy of Medicine, BIDS has grown exponentially since joining YSM. The department now comprises 12 ladder-track faculty, 13 research-track faculty, and 40 secondary faculty who have received awards and recognition from the NIH and professional societies.

Ohno-Machado’s recruitment of prominent leaders in the field has helped BIDS excel in research, education, and services. The department has secured substantial grant funding and focused on clinical data organization, AI, and health disparities. With its new department status, BIDS is positioned to continue its progress and increase its national reputation as a leader in AI in medicine. This recognition is a testament to Ohno-Machado’s accomplishments and the talented faculty at BIDS. It will help attract and retain top talent in the field while positioning YSM as a leader in AI medicine.
