New Councilmembers Sworn In, Runoff Election Ordered: A Look at the Latest in Dayton City Council News

Dayton takes care of election matters, postpones discussion on zoning problem

On Monday evening, the council met to discuss the results of the May 6 election and any related matters. After reviewing the election results, incumbent Position 3 Councilman John Headrick and newly elected Position 1 Councilman Harry Barnes Jr. were sworn in by Dayton Municipal Judge Alan D. Conner. Barnes took up the seat previously held by outgoing council member Sherial Lawson, who was recognized for her service to the city by Mayor Martin Mudd.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, council ordered a runoff election for June 15 between the top two candidates from the May 6 election for Position 2, as neither candidate secured a majority of the votes. Incumbent council member Janette Goulder-Frick was defeated in that election. She has not attended the last two council meetings since her defeat.

The meeting also included a discussion about a request to rezone 5.65 acres near the intersection of Grand Parkway and FM 1413 from General Commercial to Suburban Residential. The request was supported by city staff and Planning and Zoning Commission members, but concerns were raised by John Headrick regarding its proximity to Grand Parkway and accessibility at intersections. Headrick emphasized considering future potential developments on this land and past decisions made regarding its zoning classification before making any final decision on rezoning it to suburban residential areas.

In conclusion, after some heated debates among council members, they decided to table this discussion for a later date while agreeing that rezoning should be done carefully considering all factors involved.
