New Coach, New QB: Battle for Starting Role in Minnesota Vikings’ Training Camp

Sam Darnold to start training camp as the Vikings’ starting quarterback, not J.J. McCarthy

In the upcoming NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings are set to have a competitive training camp with Sam Darnold leading the team. Although J.J. McCarthy was selected by the team in the first round of the NFL Draft earlier this spring, it is Darnold who will start as the starting quarterback when camp begins next month.

Darnold signed with the Vikings in the offseason after leaving his role as a backup for Brock Purdy in San Francisco. He was previously a starter with the New York Jets and was chosen as the No. 3 overall pick in 2018. Meanwhile, McCarthy was picked No. 10 overall in this year’s draft following his successful season leading Michigan to a national championship.

Despite McCarthy’s potential to earn the starting role, Darnold currently has an early advantage in Minneapolis during summer practice sessions. However, it will be fascinating to see which quarterback can lead the Vikings to success under new coach Kevin O’Connell’s leadership during the upcoming season.
