New Breakthrough in Gaza Conflict as UN Approves Truce Plan Proposed by Biden

US proposal on ceasefire in Gaza approved by UN Council

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved a truce plan for Gaza proposed by the United States. The plan, put forth by President Joe Biden and announced on May 31, outlines three phases that aim to bring an end to hostilities between Hamas and Israel.

The first phase includes a six-month ceasefire, the release of some hostages, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas, and the return of Palestinian civilians. The second phase calls for a permanent ceasefire, while the third phase focuses on reconstruction and returning remains to families.

The resolution emphasizes the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza and has been presented to both Israeli authorities and Hamas representatives. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed support for the plan during a visit to Israel. The Security Council’s resolution supports a two-state solution and the unification of Gaza and the West Bank under Palestinian Authority, a point that Israel has agreed to but Hamas has not yet responded to.

Israel has accepted the terms of the approved plan while Hamas has not yet provided a response. The resolution sets the stage for progress towards a lasting peace agreement between the two parties, highlighting
