Billette, originally from the Traverse City area, joins Allegan County from the Central Michigan District Health Department, which serves six counties in Michigan. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English, as well as a master’s degree in public health. During her interview with commissioners, Billette emphasized the importance of community education and relationship-building in public health initiatives. She believes that education is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding their own health and lifestyle.
The former health officer, Angelique Joynes, resigned in January after serving for a decade. The county received over 20 applicants for the position and conducted interviews with five or six candidates. The selection process was thorough and involved multiple rounds of questions, including scenarios related to public health issues. Commissioner Dean Kapenga praised the selection process and expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Billette to the position.
