Netflix’s Ad-Supported Streaming Option Surges to 40 Million Monthly Users in Italy, Sparking Plans for Its Own Advertising Platform and Expansion into Live Events

40 million users are using Netflix every month

Netflix has seen significant growth in its ad-supported streaming option, with the platform reaching 40 million monthly users in Italy. This is a major increase from the start of the year when it had 23 million users. The ad-supported option gained 5 million users within six months of its launch in 2022, and now has a total of 270 million subscribers across all levels.

In celebration of this achievement, Netflix announced plans to launch its own advertising platform. The company’s president of advertising, Amy Reinhard, expressed that managing the advertising plan in-house will allow Netflix to maintain the same level of excellence that has made it a leader in streaming technology. While initially partnered with Microsoft, Netflix is now expanding its partnerships to include Google, The Trade Desk, and Magnite.

The news of Netflix’s ad-supported success comes alongside an announcement of further expansion into live events. The platform will stream NFL games on Christmas Day as well as live comedy specials and a boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, as well as weekly WWE broadcasts. This move occurs as Netflix and its competitors are starting to resemble traditional cable TV, with price increases and bundled packages becoming more common.
