Netflix Weighs Free Subscription Plan to Attract a Broader Audience and Boost Advertising Inventory

Netflix Evaluates Ad-Supported Model to Increase Viewer Base

Netflix is currently considering offering a free subscription plan to expand its audience and compete with traditional ad-supported television channels. The idea behind this move is tied to an advertising business model. While other platforms like Disney and Amazon have incorporated ads for all subscribers and offer ad-free experiences at a higher cost, Netflix is exploring a different approach.

The potential free plan would serve as an incentive for those who cannot afford a subscription and would create more advertising inventory for the platform. This project is still in the early stages of discussion and has not been implemented yet. However, it represents a strategic move for Netflix to attract a wider audience and expand its reach in markets where ad-supported television networks are already prevalent.

In Kenya, Netflix previously tested a free subscription plan for smartphones, allowing access to a limited content catalog without ads. Although this test was discontinued, there is internal discussion about introducing a similar plan in larger markets like Europe or Asia. The platform is exploring new ways to innovate and keep up with the changing landscape of streaming services.
