Neogen’s CelluSmart Technology Revolutionizes Biofuel Production: Reducing Carbon Intensity and Promoting Sustainability

Neogen launches CelluSmart technology for biofuel sector

Neogen®, a renowned innovator in the field of food safety solutions, has recently launched the new CelluSmart technology from Megazyme®. This pioneering technology enhances the previous NREL procedure for measuring cellulosic ethanol in biofuel production by incorporating a yeast-degrading cocktail (YDC). As a result, this groundbreaking innovation enables the ethanol industry to produce low-carbon fuels more efficiently.

Cellulosic ethanol plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% compared to standard petroleum-based fuels, contributing significantly to climate goals. By utilizing CelluSmart technology, ethanol producers have the potential to further decrease carbon intensity scores, opening up new markets such as sustainable aviation fuel.

John Adent, president and CEO of Neogen, highlighted the importance of the ethanol industry in providing low-carbon renewable energy. The CelluSmart technology leverages Neogen’s expertise in fiber and carbohydrate method development to support the industry’s growth and promote sustainability. He emphasized that this collaboration between Neogen and the ethanol industry is crucial for creating a more sustainable future.

Dr. Jason Lilly, Neogen’s vice president for the Americas and Australia/New Zealand, reiterated the company’s long-standing partnership with the biofuel industry and its commitment to providing producers with innovative technologies. The integration of CelluSmart into ASTM Method E-3417-24 ensures compliance with EPA requirements for an approved method from a voluntary consensus standards body. This collaboration between Neogen and the ethanol industry aims to create a more sustainable future by promoting efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in biofuel production.
