Navigating the Complex Intersection of Long COVID and Perimenopause: One Woman’s Story

What is the link between menopause and long COVID?

After contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus and developing long COVID, Beth’s symptoms worsened. In addition to her existing perimenopause symptoms such as erratic periods, mood swings, and fatigue, she now experienced short-term memory lapses, severe hot flashes, and brain fog. This created a confusing array of symptoms for her.

Dr. Tara Iyer, the director of the Menopause and Midlife Clinic at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, noted that Beth attributed many of these new symptoms to long COVID. However, she also pointed out that these symptoms are commonly seen as perimenopause progresses. It was unclear whether one condition was exacerbating the other.
