Mozambique Faces Tragedy after Overcrowded Fishing Boat Sinks, Killing 91 Passengers

Over 90 fatalities reported in ferry disaster off the coast of Mozambique

On Sunday, Mozambique reported that over 90 people had lost their lives in a tragic fishing boat accident. The vessel, which was serving as a ferry and carrying a packed load of passengers, sank while trying to reach the island of Mozambique in the province of Nampula. The shipwreck resulted in the loss of 91 lives, with many of the victims being children.

The incident has left the community reeling from the loss of so many lives and they are still grappling with the aftermath. Rescuers have found five survivors so far, but ongoing search efforts are being hampered by challenging sea conditions.

Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, has experienced nearly 15,000 cases and 32 deaths attributable to cholera since October, primarily concentrated in Nampula. This led to panic among travelers who were making their way to the island in response to misinformation about a cholera outbreak in the region.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of this tragic incident, given that it was an overcrowded and unfit vessel for passenger transport. It is hoped that further investigation will bring more light on how this tragedy could have been avoided and prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
