New Minor in Animal Science Introduced at the School of Agriculture and Aviation

In the fall of 2024, Morningside University’s School of Agriculture and Aviation in Sioux City, Iowa will introduce a new animal science minor. This minor will provide students with expanded career opportunities in the field of animal health and welfare. The addition of animal science reflects the university’s commitment to offering academic programs that align with the needs of the Siouxland region.

Dr. Chris Spicer, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Morningside University, is excited about the new minor and believes it will provide students with valuable interdisciplinary study options. The goal is to prepare students for successful and meaningful careers in animal science.

“The addition of this minor is an important step towards providing our students with more diverse educational opportunities,” said Dr. Spicer. “We are confident that it will provide our students with valuable skills and knowledge to excel in their future careers.”

Dr. Tom Paulsen, dean of the School of Agriculture and Aviation, emphasized the hands-on learning experiences and partnerships with local and regional agricultural organizations that will be available to students in the animal science minor. The curriculum is designed to cover animal biology, ethics, and the role of technology in animal science. Through externships, lab work, and collaboration with professionals in the field, students will be well-equipped for their future careers.

“We believe that this minor will complement a variety of majors at Morningside University,” said Dr. Paulsen. “It will give our students the opportunity to tailor their education to their career goals while also gaining practical experience through hands-on learning.”

The new animal science minor is also a testament to recent enhancements within the Regina Roth Applied Agricultural and Food Studies Department at Morningside University, such as the Rosen Ag Center and Lags Farm. These resources will provide additional support for students pursuing careers in agriculture and related fields.
