Cats Clinch Big Sky Women’s All-Sports Trophy

The women’s program at Montana State University has captured its first-ever Big Sky Conference All-Sports trophy in the league’s 36-year history. This achievement was fueled by strong performances across a variety of sports, including runner-up finishes in volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, as well as fourth place showings in basketball, tennis, and golf.

MSU Director of Athletics Leon Costello commended the Bobcat student-athletes and coaches for their success, highlighting the broad-based excellence of all programs. The women’s program did not finish lower than fourth in any final standings, reflecting their strong and consistent performances across different sports.

The Bobcat volleyball team set a school record with a 24-9 overall mark, capping their season by advancing to the Fab Four of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The cross country team, led by standouts Kyla Christopher-Moody and Grace Gilbreth, finished second at the Big Sky meet. Additionally, the indoor and outdoor track and field teams secured runner-up positions behind league power Northern Arizona.

The final standings saw Montana State at the top with an average of 7.6 points, followed closely by Northern Arizona with 7.3 points. Other notable rankings included Sacramento State in third place, and Idaho and Montana tied for fourth. The Bobcats’ historic achievement in winning the All-Sports trophy underscores the dedication and performance of female athletes across various sports at Montana State University.

In order to determine these final standings, each school’s regular season finish or conference tournament results for all conference-sponsored sports are taken into consideration using a formula that weighs different sports differently based on their importance within each sport category.

Basketball points are based on regular season finishes while soccer is excluded from these calculations due to scheduling conflicts with other events at MSU.

Volleyball points are awarded based on conference tournament outcomes while tennis points are awarded based on both regular season finishes and conference tournament outcomes.

Track & field scores include both regular season finishes (for indoor track & field) and conference tournament outcomes (for outdoor track & field). Cross country scores are determined solely by regular season finishes.

Golf scores are determined solely by conference tournament outcomes.

Overall standings were calculated by taking an average of all individual scores across all categories to determine which school had performed consistently well across all sports throughout the year.
