Monkeypox Outbreak in Israel: Understanding the Symptoms, Transmission and Prevention Measures.

Global Terror: The Emergence of a Lethal Strain of Monkeypox

The monkeypox virus, first identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958, has recently caused an outbreak globally, including in Israel. While the majority of infection cases in adults are attributed to sexual contact, particularly between men, children can also acquire the virus through contact with infected animals or humans. The Ministry of Health in Israel has reported cases of the virus in January, February and March 2024 and advised vaccination for individuals at risk.

The virus is closely related to smallpox but is less contagious, causes milder symptoms and is less fatal. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle pain and a rash that spreads across the body. It can be transmitted through contact with infected animals or humans as well as through saliva fragments from close contact. In Israel, most cases have occurred during sexual intercourse between homosexual or bisexual men.

The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation and advises individuals at risk to receive vaccination to protect themselves against the virus. It is important for people to stay informed about its spread and take necessary precautions to prevent its transmission.
