The initial findings of India’s parliamentary elections reveal that the National Democratic Alliance, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has won a majority of votes. Although the NDA’s performance was below expectations, with the bloc projected to win approximately 290 seats, down from more than 360 as per exit polls, Modi will retain his position as head of government. This marks the fourth term in office for Modi since 2014.
However, the NDA’s victory falls short of a two-thirds majority required to amend the constitution. Currently, Modi and his allies hold 342 seats in parliament. The opposition bloc INDIA, led primarily by the Indian National Congress, is projected to have 228 seats. This represents a significant increase from its current representation of 119 seats and nearly doubles its representation in the chamber.
The seven-week election in India was the largest in history, with over 970 million eligible voters casting their ballots. Unfortunately, extreme heat during the final voting rounds led to casualties among some voters. Despite these challenges, the election results set up a new chapter in Indian politics.
