Mobility and Independence: Steuben County Launches a Mobile Health Van to Provide Vaccinations to Remote Communities

Steuben County introduces mobile health van to provide vaccination services to underserved rural areas

Steuben County Public Health has recently launched a new mobile vaccination van to provide health services to its remote and rural communities. The van, which is similar in size to a food truck, will travel throughout the county to reach individuals in areas where health services and providers are less accessible, particularly outside major cities such as Corning, Hornell, and Bath.

The county health department will utilize the van for pop-up clinics to offer immunizations for school-aged children, along with flu, hepatitis A and B, tetanus, and COVID vaccines. Additionally, the van will carry Narcan, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. Darlene Smith, the Public Health Director, expressed excitement about launching the mobile unit, highlighting the need for greater mobility and independence following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Equipped with two nursing stations, storage space, electric outlets for charging devices and USB ports for data transferring files from one device to another or from one computer to another or from one device to another or between devices. A generator powers the van’s refrigerator which stores vaccines at the correct temperature. The van was purchased for $212
