In Spennymoor, County Durham, England, a miraculous corn snake named Agnus survived being outside in the cold for a long time and being attacked by crows. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) received a report of Agnus slithering on a garage roof and came to its rescue. Expert John Lawson at the RSPCA explained that Agnus had been caught by a crow but was released when the crow realized it couldn’t eat the snake. The snake’s owner came forward to confirm that Agnus was his missing pet, who had been gone for about a year.
Despite not being able to generate their own body heat and relying on their environment to maintain temperature, corn snakes like Agnus can survive extreme conditions thanks to their ability to enter brumation states, similar to hibernation. This survival strategy is what allowed Agnus to weather the ordeal and eventually be reunited with its owner after treatment for respiratory infections caused by the cold.
While corn snakes are not venomous and do not pose any threat to humans, they are typically orange or yellow with large red spots and black edges along their back. They are native to North America and primarily eat small rodents and birds. It is advised that snake owners keep their cages secure to prevent escapes.
