Police Arrested in Mexico for Alleged Murder of Ayotzinapa Student Yanqui Gómez

On Wednesday, Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that a police officer accused of murdering a student from the teachers’ college in March has been arrested. This incident took place in Ayotzinapa and it inflamed the spirits of the town that still demands answers regarding the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

During his morning press conference, the president stated that all those involved in the murder of the young student from Ayotzinapa are now in prison. The arrest took place on a guarded and protected ranch, where the investigation is ongoing.

The unresolved disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa in 2014 has been a source of ongoing dissatisfaction and protests. The actions of the police officer who allegedly killed Gomez, and later tried to escape, were condemned by the president as an abuse of authority. The incident led to the resignation of the secretaries of Security and the Interior of Guerrero, as well as the removal of the state prosecutor.
