Mexico’s Mining Industry Takes a Turn in April 2023: A Closer Look

Mining production reached a one-year high

In April 2023, Mexico’s mining and metallurgical production experienced a 18 percent increase, marking its best performance in a year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). However, when compared to April 2023, there was a 3.5 percent decrease, with 13 annual readings showing contraction. Despite this, April’s decline was the least pronounced in a year, with the record standing at 83 points, a level not seen since last year.

Sulfur production saw a significant decrease of 49 percent in April. Meanwhile, copper and lead production fell by 23.4 percent and 18.7 percent respectively. On the other hand, zinc, fluorite and gold production increased by 1.3 percent, 2 percent and 27.6 percent respectively.
