The Magdalena Mixhuca Sports Complex is a sprawling sports facility located in Mexico City that covers an area of 192 hectares. The complex comprises four Olympic venues, including the Fernando Montes de Oca Olympic Fencing Hall, the Juan Escutia Sports Palace, the Jesús Martínez Palillo Athletics Stadium, and the Agustín Melgar Olympic Velodrome.
The Juan Escutia Sports Palace, now known as the Palacio de Deportes, is a major basketball and volleyball venue that has hosted several high-profile events such as the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship and matches in the Men’s World Volleyball League. The Jesús Martínez Palillo Athletics Stadium was renovated in 2014 and was the venue for the Pan American Sports Festival and the UIPM 2018 Pentathlon World Championships. It is currently home to three of Mexico City’s American Football teams.
The Fernando Montes de Oca Olympic Fencing Hall underwent extensive renovations prior to the 50th anniversary of the Games in 2018 and now includes facilities for fencing, artistic gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and handball for use by clubs and the local community. The Agustín Melgar Olympic Velodrome was renovated in the mid-1990s and again in 2016 and is equipped with an artificial pitch for local football clubs to use. It has a concrete track that replaced its wooden one in 1997.
In addition to these venues, the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports Complex also houses other sports facilities such as the Hermanos Rodríguez racetrack, which has hosted the Mexican Grand Prix since 2015, and Mexico City’s newest baseball venue, Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium. This stadium opened in 2019 and is home to Mexico City’s Diablos Rojos team.
Overall, this sports complex offers a wide range of facilities for various sports at all levels of play, catering to beginners as well as high-performance athletes.
