Mexican Archer Maya Falls Short in Season Opener, Looks to Rebound in Upcoming Event

In the compound women’s final at the season opener in Shanghai, Maya, also known as the Mexican archer, came very close to winning. She qualified on top and made her way through the brackets before building a two-point lead over Jyothi Surekha Vennam. However, Maya succumbed to the pressure and shot an eight and then a worse nine in the tiebreak against her Indian opponent. This loss marks the second major event in less than a year that Maya has lost to an Indian archer.

Despite this disappointing loss, Maya remained optimistic about her performance in upcoming events. She expressed her confidence that she would improve over the next few days, despite the quick turnaround from one competition to another leaving her still trying to find her shot. The event in Yecheon is crucial for competitors to perform well as it is one of only three stages in the shortened season.

With the points she earned in Shanghai, Maya is currently in a good position to qualify for her second Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. She has fond memories of competing in Mexico and hopes to have her family’s support during this upcoming event. Although she finished fourth in the past World Cup held in Tlaxcala, Maya aims to clinch her first international victory at the Yecheon Jinho International Archery Field. She sees this event as a potential turning point in her career and is determined to make the most of this opportunity.
