Mets’ Young Catcher Francisco Alvarez Sustains Torn Ligament in Left Thumb, Undergoing Surgery: Team Rallying Around Injury

Francisco Alvarez requires surgery for torn ligament in thumb

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has sustained a torn ligament in his left thumb, which will require surgery, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. The injury occurred during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night, just one day after Alvarez had sustained a sprained left thumb while running the bases in a previous game. An MRI was conducted to confirm the extent of the injury and it revealed that Alvarez would need surgery.

Despite the setback, Alvarez had been performing well at the plate with a batting average of .236, one home run and eight RBIs. In response to his injury, catcher Tomás Nido’s contract was selected from Triple-A Syracuse and left-hander Kolton Ingram was designated for assignment.

Alvarez is only 22 years old and Mendoza expressed his disappointment over the injury but also emphasized the need for the team to rally together in Alvarez’s absence. He remains hopeful that Alvarez will return to the lineup later in the season.

Teammate Omar Narváez started in Alvarez’s place during Saturday’s game and conveyed his sadness over the injury but insisted that the team is prepared to move forward and fill the void left by Alvarez. He praised Alvarez’s resilience and positive attitude, expressing confidence that he will make a swift recovery and return to the field soon.
