Mets Release Reliever Michael Tonkin from Roster Sparking Rumors of Bullpen Changes

Mets Cut Ties with Michael Tonkin

The Mets have officially designated reliever Michael Tonkin for assignment, opening up a roster spot for Julio Teheran after his signing was made official. Tonkin, who earned one of the final bullpen spots out of spring training, had a rough time in his last two appearances after a strong start on Opening Day.

In his most recent outing against the Detroit Tigers on April 1, Tonkin gave up two hits and five runs, though none were earned. He continued to struggle in Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Tigers, allowing four hits and three runs, two of which were earned, in the decisive top of the 11th inning.

The Mets had hoped that Tonkin could serve as a reliever capable of pitching multiple innings, a role he often filled during his time with the Atlanta Braves in 2023. However, his Mets tenure has come to an end after just three appearances as he was unable to find consistency on the mound.
