Mets opt for closer-by-committee approach with troubled Edwin Díaz

Edwin Díaz demoted from closer role by Mets due to ongoing struggles

The New York Mets have announced that Edwin Díaz will no longer be their closer, following his struggles at the start of the 2024 season. The team has opted for a closer-by-committee approach, as reported by The New York Post. This decision will remain in place until Díaz regains his confidence on the mound.

Díaz did not pitch in the Mets’ recent 7-3 victory over the Miami Marlins, after blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning. In his last eight appearances, he has posted a 10.80 ERA, giving up four home runs in just 8.1 innings. He has failed to convert three of his last four save opportunities.

Despite missing the entire 2023 season due to a torn patellar tendon, Díaz is still a two-time All-Star and one of the most iconic players on the Mets roster. His choice of walk-up music, “Narcos,” became a fan favorite and one of the most memorable entrances in baseball history.

Following his standout season in 2022, Díaz signed a record-breaking five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets, making him the highest paid relief pitcher in MLB history. Throughout his career, Díaz has accumulated 210 saves and maintained a career ERA of 3.04.
