Metropolitan Health District Celebrates National Public Health Week with Scholarships and Community Events

Metro Health to Hold Events for National Public Health Week

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is celebrating National Public Health Week with a series of programming events. These events include offering scholarships dedicated to the memory of former director, Dr. Fernando A. Guerra, as well as hosting community events to encourage residents to support the national theme of taking a unified approach to public health and community well-being.

City Manager Erik Walsh emphasized the importance of focusing on health and well-being as a priority for all residents, with support from Metro Health and other local organizations. San Antonio has been recognized nationally with a gold medal designation from CityHealth for its commitment to public health.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) is promoting daily themes during National Public Health Week to raise awareness and encourage action on issues that impact community health, such as climate change and creating healthy neighborhoods. Mayor Ron Nirenberg highlighted the importance of residents committing to wellness in order to create a healthier, more resilient community.

In honor of Dr. Fernando A. Guerra’s legacy, Metro Health and its partners are offering scholarships to two local university students pursuing a career in public health. These scholarships are available for application from April 1 to May 5. Metro Health Director Dr. Claude A. Jacob expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the San Antonio Area Foundation and local universities in honoring Dr. Guerra’s dedication to public health.

To further engage the community, Metro Health is hosting a Public Health Fest on April 4 at Mission Marquee Plaza. This event will offer free resources including vaccinations, health screenings, and information on Metro Health programs
